Fire Service Engineers
Fire Service Engineers have a major role to play in ensuring that
over 3 million litres of fire fighting foam discharged annually
as part of maintenance procedures is handled responsibly, for the
direct protection of the community’s water supply.
It
is worth repeating the message on the Home Page here – fluorosurfactants
used in fire fighting foams are persistent and likely to be toxic
– they are not extracted by sewage treatment systems. Although
95% of all foam extinguishers are likely to contain AFFF foam,
it is essential that protein type foams are not mixed with foams
such as AFFF. Proteins require additional pre-treatment before
extracting the fluorinated materials.
